[Reviews Roundup] September 2012

With all the craziness of music blogging, from concerts to press releases to interviews to festivals, it can be hard to find time to sit down, listen to an album and give it an honest, thorough review. With that in mind, we came up with the Reviews Roundup, a way for us to look back at all of the major releases in the past month and give them an on-the-spot review. Whether we like them or not, we'll spout out a quick blurb about the album to give an overall impression of what makes it good or bad along with a score based out of five.

This month, we've had majors releases from Animal Collective, The xx, G.O.O.D. Music, Grizzly Bear, The Raveonettes, Mount Eerie, The Presets, The Vaccines, and many more. After the jump, you can read our quick thoughts on this month's offerings.

NPR's First Listen has numerous treats for everyone to start their week with, streaming new albums from Chan Marshall (aka Cat Power), Canadian indie outfit Stars, and San Francisco experimental band Deerhoof, all of whom have new albums dropping next week.

Cat Power's highly anticipated album Sun is her first in four years, and the first since 2006's The Greatest to feature original compositions, so the hype is well deserved. The 11-track effort drops on September 4th via Matador. Head here to stream it.

[News] Cat Power Announces New Album: 'Sun'

Today saw Twitter explode with the trending topic of Cat Power, who, after a long absence, returned today with the announcement of a new album. On September 4th, Chan Marshall, aka Cat Power, will release her ninth studio album Sun, her first full-length release of original material in over six years. The album saw Chan recording in various locations across the glove, a process that was heavily influenced by her breakup with longtime boyfriend and actor Giovanni Ribisi. When speaking to The Stool Pigeon earlier this month, she said, "I cut my hair off three days [after the break-up], got on a plane to France and finished the shit. It’s all good, you know. I love the person very much. I actually love this record very much, too. I’m very proud of it."

The announcement also came with a fantastic preview in the form of the track "Ruin," which sees Chan channeling her heartbreak in an unexpected way. The song is upbeat, with a piano hook that is catchy and hopeful despite the solemn lyrically content. Check out the song, which is paired with an announcement video, after the jump, along with the tracklisting for Sun.

[Watch] Cat Power - "King Rides By" (Official Video) Feat. Manny Pacquiao

Cat Power let loose the video for her 7-minute re-recording of "King Rides By" late last week and the video itself wasn't what I expected at al. It features the Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao training and will most likely make you feel far too unfit. At least it's New Year Eve soon and we can all pledge allegiance to the gym for at least a day or two... maybe.

As well as the video though, you can grab yourself the new version of the track on her official site for the small price of a donation. A donation that benefits two charities: the Festival of Children Foundation and the Ali Forney Center. So, keeping with the spirit of giving this Holiday season dig deep one last time before hitting the sales.

Cat Power’s as yet untitled 9th LP is looking likely for a 2012 release but for now check out the re-recording of this track which was originally released in 1996 on Chan's album, What Would The Community Think.
