[Watch] RJD2 Shows Off His Studio For Electric Independence

Electric Independence visits Philadelphia DJsician Ramble John “RJ” Krohn, better known as RJD2. RJ takes us for a tour of his multiple drum kits and massive modular synths. Despite the success of his solo material on Def Jux, producing for every independent rapper under the sun, and his recent, poppier work on XL Recordings, RJ insists that he has no chops. Yeah, he went to music school. Big deal. It’s not like going to school’s automatically going to give a guy an infusion of chops. He’s a messy 13 year-old experimenter and that’s how he likes it, shredders and virtuosos be damned. The proof is in the cobblers, which he generously cooked up for us and even dusted them with cinnamon!

RJD2 Set To Release "New" Album: Inversions Of The Colossus

I knew about this awhile back but didnt want to officially announce until RJ made a statement on the album. RJ is dropping a "new" album titled Inversions of the Colossus. This record contains instrumentals of several songs (Games You Can Win, The Glow, The Shining Path, Crumbs Off The Table, A Sons Cycle, Gypsy Caravan and Walk With Me) off his recent LP The Colossus. However, since the The Colossus was mainly instrumental anyways RJ decided to throw in some extra goodies for the fans.

"I realized that I had enough songs that I was happy with to REPLACE those 7 instrumental songs that were originally on The Colossus,” RJD2 wrote. “Then, things started to come into focus-release a companion piece to The Colossus that encompasses the vocal songs-sans vocals-and 7 new songs (almost all of them being instrumental)"

Two of the new tracks, Liquid Luck and The Perfect Occasion, fans may have heard awhike back when RJ posted them on his blog preparing people for the release of The Colossus. Unfortunately, they have been removed from the site but you can listen to the snippets here along with the rest of the tracklisting. Inversions of The Colossus releases on June 22nd via RJ's Electrical Connections.

[Watch] RJD2 Discusses Sampling On NPR's World Cafe

Colossus marks a departure from the comparatively traditional pop-rock sound of RJD2's 2007 album The Third Hand. His pop influences surface on tracks such as "The Glow," but his textures are driven by kick and snare patterns that resemble the hip-hop of his earlier work. In a session from World Cafe, RJD2 demonstrates the process of creating sample-based music, using one of his own songs, "The Stranger." (Via NPR)

[Watch and Download] RJD2 Live At Moog Sessions

One of my favorite producers, RJD2 was recently featured on an episode of Paste Magazine's Live At Moog series. RJ got down on the MPC and performed the song "Get It" off his album The Third Hand, played everyones favorite classic "Ghostwriter" off his debut album Deadringer and as an added bonus, performed the Super Mario Bros. Theme! Take a look at the video for Get It above and check out the other 2 videos plus a bonus download of the session after the jump.

Looks like Mr. D2 is popping up all over the place once again. This time he's rocking a remix of Balkan Beat Box's track "War Again". This one has a pretty fresh, Dancehall type sound, which is a first I believe for RJ, but nonetheless its that genuine RJD2 sound. So check it out below and check back here later this week, since i'll catching RJ on his last leg of his Colossus Tour.

[Download] Copywrite "Forever And A Day" Feat. Middle Distance Runner (Prod. by RJD2)

I've been waiting for this track ever since Copy let me know about it on twitter a few months back. Copywrite's newest single Forever And A Day, featuring Middle Distance Runner and produced by fellow MHZ member RJD2, mainly reflects on his relationship with Tero Smith aka hip hop legend Camu Tao but is also a homage to those we lost. This song is deep and incredibly dope, shouts to Copywrite, RJ and Middle Distance Runner for another classic that will forever be on repeat.
