[Listen] Morly - "And Sooner Than We Know It..."
If you are on the hunt for tons of texture with seemingly minimal effort, Minnesota producer/singer-songwriter Morly is just what you need. I love how every element of her latest song, "And Sooner Than We Know It..." feels intentional all the way down to the way she leverages her own vocals as another thin layer of ice to what was already an incredibly chill track.
"And Sooner Than We Know It..." comes from her forthcoming debut EP, In Defense Of My Muse, which drops on August 14th courtesy of CASCINE.
Should you find yourself thirsty for, uh.....more....Morly you should definitely have a listen to her previously released tracks "Malestrom" (from Ryan Hemsworth's Secret Songs compilation) and "Seraphase" (which is on the EP as well) to hold you over until her EP drops.
Sydney Rockers Little May Announce World Tour
Sydney trio Little May have revealed that they will be hitting the road starting in September on a world tour in support of their upcoming debut album, For The Company, which drops on October 9th courtesy of Dew Process and Capitol Records. Tickets for their US dates are on sale now which you can snag over on their website.
If you haven't heard their debut single, "Home" yet you need to get on that ASAP. This is a great first taste of what's to come. The band was fortunate enough to have Aaron Brooking Dessner from The National produce the record and from the sounds of it he really made sure they stepped out with their best foot forward.

[Watch] Jacuzzi Boys - "Happy Damage"
Good news, everyone! Miami rock trio Jacuzzi Boys have announced that come this fall we will have more music from the band in the form of a new EP titled Happy Damage, which will come out on their newly formed label Mag Mag, which will be a home for future self releases and special projects from friends and collaborators. To celebrate, the band released this video of the title track from the EP, which features live footage of the band from their shows.
If that tickled your fancy you're in luck because the band is offering "Happy Damage" for the actual retail price of $FREE.99 over on Soundcloud, so snatch that up ASAP.
Also, if you have a moment, head over to their newly designed website for more info (which btw is pretty GIFtastic I must say).
[Listen] Synkro - "Changes"
Manchester producer Synkro has unveiled the title track from his forthcoming debut full length Changes, which drops on September 19th courtesy of Apollo Records. It's been awhile since a song has managed to get under my skin like "Changes" has. Even hours after playing it the first time I kept thinking about all of the subtle textures that are lurking within this track. The soothing tones that are woven throughout this ambient little number will envelop your eardrums and coat you in chills faster than any commercial grade air conditioner in a department can after being outside on a hot summer day.
Did I mention it's hot as hell in NYC today?
Anyway.
You can join me in pre-ordering Changes over on Bandcamp. Yes, it has been a long time since a single song has compelled me to pre-order, so that speaks volumes about how on board I am with this.
Be sure to dig around in his Soundcloud as well, there's a LOT of goodies there as well.
[Watch] VOWWS - "The Great Sun" (Official Video)
Fresh from the 'Better Late Than Never' pile is the latest from SKOA's favorite dark angels VOWWS *now with 2 Ws if you're following along!*. Their latest track, "The Great Sun”, which was released back in May, is as dreary and dancey as ever but with a bit more boom and gloom than their previous track, "Losing Myself In You". As we've continue to follow the evolution of the (now) LA-duo since their WAZU days, it's evident that the only direction these guys are heading is onward and upward to bigger and better things.
"The Great Sun" is the title track of their forthcoming debut full length which will likely drop sometime this fall. For now, enjoy the video above complete with karaoke-style Japanese lyrics (at least I hope they're the lyrics in Japanese anyway).
The band is currently on a mini-tour of sorts and will be making a stop in NYC at our new favorite venue AVIV. Peep tour dates below.
[Listen] Kenna - "Sleep When We Die"
The musical journey that Kenna has taken fans on in the past 12 years has been a long and winding road. There have been sharp turns, dips, and even a bit of off roading along the way. For those of us who have managed to stick it out and not rage quit when things like leaks, switching labels, or hard drive failures have deterred the success he rightfully deserves, it appears that the tides are turning and our favorite underdog may finally find his place in the sun.
After releasing a series of videos that detail the story behind his EP series, Land 2 Air Chronicles, Kenna unveiled a brand new track, "Sleep When We Die" from his long anticipated third full-length, Songs For Flight, which premiered on Zane Lowe's Beats 1 show last week. In a message to fans on Facebook regarding SWWD, "This song was meant for you to rally, be happy. And take on the adventure ahead."
I don't know about you, but I'm ready to rally on to the next phase of this adventure.
Word on the street is that he has more in the works in the coming weeks, so be on the lookout for updates.
[Listen] SEØUEL -"Subtle"
Feast your ears on the aptly titled track "Subtle", which is the latest from London-based Scottish producer SEØUEL. The tune comes from his forthcoming EP Reykjavik, which is due on July 24th courtesy of Disorder Recordings. As the EP name would suggest, the EP was inspired by sights and sounds of Iceland's capital. The EP is a followup to last year's EP, Prague (which you can stream tracks from over on Soundcloud), so clearly we are getting a feel for the mysterious beatmaker's ability to absorb the world around him and create on the go.
Gotta say, it's impressive how transformative he is from EP to EP and track to track. It's very easy to get lost in a trippy electronic record, but in the case of Reykavik SEØUEL takes you on a journey through the icy dark countryside of one of Europe's most isolated and dramatic countries all the while keeping your full attention throughout the experience.
Once you've enjoyed "Subtle" below, be sure to dig through his Soundcloud for more dark delectable delights.
[Review] Father John Misty - 'I Love You, Honeybear'
Father John Misty is in love, or out of love, or in love with love. I Love You, Honeybear scrutinizes the roller coaster of an enigma we call love from both an observer’s and a participant’s point of view.
The ethereal Josh Tillman a.k.a. Father John Misty released his second studio album on Tuesday charmingly titled I Love You, Honey Bear. His pragmatic lyrics roll out playfully like a familiar nostalgia of a hippie’s fringe dragging across your goose bumped skin. Each song’s progressive melody takes you on a serendipitous ride. You can’t help but instinctively sway back and forth feeling your knees turn to syrup.
I sat with glorious anticipation as the opening track "I Love You, Honeybear" played. Just as I expected, I could feel the silly, sloppy look on my face better known as “the love grin” taking up residence on my lips. Let’s just say it’s not difficult to fall in love with Josh. Songs like “When You're Smiling And Astride Me”, and “The Ideal Husband“ are where he honestly expresses the realness of loving someone despite faults, fear, and idiosyncrasies. The old cliché “The moment you came to, I swore I would change” hits home in "Strange Encounter" with its guitar riffs and percussion making your soul a tad more aware.
A welcomed lyricist for our time, Father John Misty sings without blinders all the while with a candid accuracy. In “Bored in the USA”, Josh mellifluously serenades us (piano in stride) with the words, “Is this the part where I get all I ever wanted…Who said that? Can I get my money back?” A song wrapped in the theme of complacency, and disillusionment comes complete with audience laughter and applause. The album’s ending track, “I Went to the Store One Day" shuffles in a light of hope for the love naysayers. This song in particular stirred part of me that secretly hides due to relationships lost, disappointments in love, and missed opportunities. Easily relating to the words, “And now in just one year’s time I've become jealous, rail thin and prone to paranoia when I'm stoned-this isn't true love someone ought to put me in a home…. Say do you wanna get married...?" was a gentle reminder of just how tumultuous and delightful love can actually be. Perhaps I do long for someone who can make me feel the way this album makes me feel. I Love You, Honeybear is the perfect remedy for all the cynical and disconnected hearts who long for someone to make them believe in these lyrics: “Don’t let me die in a hospital; I’ll save the big one for the last time we make love…all because I went to the store one day…”
Father John Misty is playing at Rough Trade in BK on Feb 12 and The Bowery Ballroom on Feb 14th.
